Here are some tips for understanding and being involved in the process of finding and developing a relationship with an architect from the American Institute of Architects (www.aia.org).

1. Think carefully about your building needs.
2. Next, build a list of potential architects.
3. Interview your top candidates
4. Ask questions.
5. Have the architect take you to a completed work site and ask for references from past clients.
6. Ask more questions. If there is anything you don’t understand, ask the architect for clarification.
7. Make a decision.
8. Put it in writing.
